Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen, passed away at the age of 95 on December 5, 2013. Mandela, who led South Africa out of apartheid and became the nation’s first black president after 27 years of imprisonment, died in the company of his family at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg. His death was announced by South African President Jacob Zuma.
May his soul rest in peace.
A trained lawyer who rose to prominence as a leader of the African National Congress’s fight against the Afrikaaner regime, Mandela was imprisoned in 1962 for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government.
