The Martyrs Day is being observed across the country today by paying heartfelt tributes and respect towards the great martyrs who laid down their lives for establishing people´s sovereign rights.
The day is specially observed by commemorating the contribution and sacrifices of the four brave sons—Sukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasarath Chand and Ganga Lal Shrestha, who raised their voice against the autocratic Rana regime.
Sukra Raj, who inspired the Nepali people to revolt for their political rights through the founding of Nepal Prajaparishad, was hanged to death from a tree at Teku on Magh 10, 1997 B.S. Two days later, Dharma Bhakta was hanged at Siphal while Dasarath Chand and Ganga Lal were shot dead by the Ranas at Shobha Bhagwati two more days later.
Many others, who followed suit in course of the revolt against the feudal Panchayati Rule and the monarchy are remembered on this day.
