Wikipedia is planning to shut down its English-language site on Wednesday in protest against proposed anti-piracy laws in the United States. Other websites like blog Boing Boing and user-generated news site Reddit also plan to take part in the ‘blackout’.
The websites are opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) which is being debated in the US Congress. Although Twitter was also asked to join the campaign, it has declined the offer so far.
SOPA’s supporters say the legislation prevents revenue flowing to ‘illegal’ websites. The bill proposed in the US Congress is designed to block access to websites containing unauthorized copyright material. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Advertisers and payment processors will be forbidden to do business with copyright violators overseas as well. Search engines will also be required to remove foreign sites from their results if they are found to have illegal material.
Wikipedia has stated that it has decided to stage its first ever public protest because the bills prevent access to free and open web. It is against regulation of the internet and censoring online freedoms.
Websites taking part in the shutdown will go offline for 24 hours. The blackout begins from midnight Eastern Standard Time (05:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
