The United States government has confirmed the sale of fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth $30 billion. Saudi Arabia will receive new 84 Boeing F-15 jets and will also upgrade its existing 70 Saudi F-15s which is a part of a $60 billion arms deal approved by the US Congress last year.
President Barrack Obama announced the sale from Hawai where is he is on a holiday at the moment. The US government also stated that the deal will support more than 50,000 American jobs. Saudi Arabia is one of the principal allies in the Middle East and has long been a close military partner.
Apart from the F-15s, the larger $60 billion package also includes Apache attack helicopters, Black Hawk helicopters, and a range of missiles and bomb. Saudi Arabia is also the third largest supplier of oil to the United States.
The United States is also preparing to supply $11 billion of arms to Iraq in the near future to counter Iranian threat in the region.
