According to a survey by Transparency International (TI), an international anti-corruption watchdog, the political parties are the most corrupt institutions in Nepal. 53.7 percent of respondents surveyed in Nepal viewed the political parties as the most corrupt institutions followed by the parliament and the police.
Out of the total 1,044 people who were surveyed, the major reason for paying bribe in Nepal was to avoid problems with authorities such as police or speed up paperworks when requiring government services. The respondents also placed their highest confidence in media when asked whom they trust the most to fight corruption in Nepal.
The survey also states that 40 percent of Nepali people reported paying bribes in the past 12 months. The highest amounts of bribe (more than Rs 3,500 per year) was paid by 2.2 percent of Nepali households while 18.8 percent paid from Rs 2,485 to Rs 35,429. 32.2 percent had paid less than Rs 2,000 in a year to receive services from public institutions.
In the SAARC region, the Bangladeshis topped the list with 66 percent followed by India and Pakistan at 54 and 49 percent respectively.
