Nepal Police has arrested a Nepali citizen and two foreigners in one of the biggest seizures of counterfeit currency in the country. A joint team of Anti-Terrorism Cell and the Metropolitan Police, Kalimati arrested the them from Kalanki with fake Indian Currency (IC) notes worth Rs 102.3 million.
The arrestees have been identified as Dik Bahdur Nepali, of Khotang district, Denise Sensez of Philippines and Nasim Alam of India. They are currently detained at the Kalimati Police station for further investigation.
Every year, Nepal Police arrest hundreds of foreigners and Nepali citizens with fake IC notes worth millions of Rupees. The fake currency racket has been a very sensitive issue for India and many shootings in the capital have been linked to mafias dealing with counterfeit currency.
India imposed a ban on the circulation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination notes of its currency in Nepal about ten years ago , citing cross-border flow of fake IC notes. The Reserve Bank of India has not lifted the ban since then even though Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) had requested its Indian counterpart to lift the ban in recent years.
