Less than a week after a woman was burnt alive in Chitwan after being accused of being a witch, residents of Barahi village in Rajbiraj have assaulted Sujan Devi Yadav, 38, accusing her of practicing witchcraft. Yadav was dragged out of her house and beaten up by the local villagers.
According to witnesses, a group led by the local shaman, Ramdev Ram assaulted Yadav in front of her husband, Bhabar Lal. She is currently undergoing treatment at Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital. The victim has filed a complaint against the perpetrators but the District Police Office have yet to arrest them.
A local witchdoctor was also involved in the case of burning a woman alive in Chitwan and social workers have blamed the government for not doing enough to prevent such incidents. Most of the women accused of witchcraft in recent years belong to the Dalit community and were found to have challenged the local witchdoctor in their villages.
