The state-owned fuel provider, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) is planning to introduce LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) consumer cards so that it can ensure a smooth supply of cooking gas to both consumers and businesses. NOC has already printed four million consumer cards and is planning to issue them to consumers and businesses within a week.
According to NOC officials, consumers will receive the ‘red’ card while the businesses will have to use the ‘blue’ card to get cooking gas from the gas dealers. NOC plans to issue 2.5 million ‘red’ cards and 1.5 million ‘blue’ cards. NOC has stated that 30 percent of the LPG cylinders are used by businesses and they would be charged the cost price while consumers will get cooking gas for the subsidized price of Rs 1,415. The cost price for NOC is Rs 1869.28
NOC plans to provide subsidies to students and needy families from the profits made from the sales to businesses. NOC hopes that the new move will prevent hoarding from both businesses and consumers. The government also believes that the introduction of the consumer cards will ensure smooth supply of cooking gas and make the distribution channel more transparent.
