Jeevan Shrestha, an 11 year old orphan from Myagdi district has died of his injuries at Manipal Medical College in Pokhara after being severely beaten up on the charge of stealing 10 Rupees. Shrestha was beaten up by a local butcher, Aslam Khan, nine days ago. He was transferred to Pokhara after doctors could not provide adequate treatment in his hometown.
Shrestha was severely thrashed by Khan after he was caught eating biscuits with Khan’s son Mustafa, who had stolen (Indian Currency) Rs 10 from his father’s meat shop. Shrestha was also HIV positive and had been living with his uncle after his parents had died from AIDS.
Police have arrested Aslam and investigation revealed that the boy had died of the beating. Aslam had offered Rs 60,000 to Shrestha’s uncle and police were not aware of the incident until the boy’s death. Shrestha’s body has been sent for post mortem and the police plan to charge Aslam for murder.
