According to the Insurance Board (IB), nine life insurance companies reported revenue of Rs 2.67 billion in the first quarter of current fiscal year, which is an increment of 25.6 percent over last fiscal year.
Nepal Life Insurance Company (NLIC) topped the list in terms of premium collection at Rs 637 million in the first quarter. NLIC has also added 4,000 agents this fiscal year. It also reported that most of the new agents are working in rural areas and the company generates almost 50 percent of business from rural areas.
Indemnity policies are still the most favored insurance policy among policyholders in the country. In the first quarter of this fiscal year, insurance companies reported income of Rs 1.28 billion by selling new or renewing old indemnity policies.
Although awareness about insurance products is growing, less than 1.6 million Nepalis are currently insured in the country. The total insured population stands at 6 percent of the total population of 26.62 million.
