According to a recent study by the government, Mugu , one of the most backward districts of Karnali zone has dozens of unauthorized medical clinics carrying out illegal and unsafe abortions. The clinics are also illegally using Medone, a drug which health officials say is very harmful to pregnant women when carrying out abortions.
The government has so far shown no concern and has failed to act to curb the illegal abortion services provided by these unauthorized clinics. The District Hospital of Mugu reported that in the last week, three pregnant women were admitted to the public hospital after suffering excessive bleeding while undergoing operation of abortion in the private clinics.
According to the hospital officials, private clinics use Medone, which is not used in government hospitals and the medicine causes excessive bleeding in pregnant women.
Only District Public Health Offices are authorized by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) to carry out safe abortion services. Private clinics do not have the authority to carry out such operations but are doing so due to government’s lack of monitoring and control. According to the chief of District Public Health Office, Mugu, even government health workers are involved in selling Medone to private clinics.
A Medone tablet costs only Rs 850 in Nepalgunj but private clinics in Mugu have been charging Rs 1,800 for a single tablet.
