The government is planning to hand out operating licenses to run Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) in the next two months. Nine different operators had applied for the license more than a year ago. IPTV allows consumers who have internet access to enjoy television programs via the internet with better quality voice and picture. 3G subscribers can also access IPTV from their handsets as well.
The government has decided to form a taskforce consisting of four members, headed by under secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC). The taskforce will submit its report in two weeks with necessary study and suggest licensing procedures and requirements.
According to MoIC, IPTV operating licenses will then be awarded to operators who fit the Ministry’s guidelines. Although the license to operate IPTV was opened two years ago, the government had not issued any licenses due to lack of proper guidelines. According to government officials, mainly Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Cable operators have shown interest to operate IPTV.
Nepal Telecom and Nepal Television are also planning to introduce IPTV in the near future. It is currently seeking assistance from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Nepal Telecom will provide the technical infrastructure while Nepal Television plans to provide content for IPTV.
