The government has decided to evict the squatters who have encroached on public land along the riverside in Kathmandu valley. The Ministry for Physical Planning and Works will issue a final notice of seven days today to identify real landless squatters in the capital. All squatters will be asked to submit their residential details to the ministry.
The government will then proceed to evict the squatters from the river banks in the capital after identifying them. Home Ministry officials informed the media that although alternative housing arrangement in being planned for squatters, it is not possible to provide land to squatters in the capital.
According to a study by the government, it has been revealed that more than 10,500 squatters have been living on the banks of Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara and Dhobikhola rivers in the valley.The report also states that more than 1,500 ropanis (76.3 hectares) of land have been encroached by the squatters.
