According to a government study, a major earthquake in the capital would render a million people homeless and the biggest challenges in the Kathmandu Valley will be finding enough spaces to accommodate them. In a joint study conducted by the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) and Nepal government, 84 open spaces have been identified in the capital that could be accommodate 800,000 internal displaced persons (IDPs) in the event of a crisis.

According to the report, the Valley’s estimated population is 3.5 million and in an event of a major quake measuring 9 on the Richter scale, more than 60 percent of the buildings would be destroyed. The report has recommended that schools can be used as reception centers where IDPs can assemble for registration for placement procedure.

The report recommends the government to identify retrofitted schools in the capital as soon as possible. According to the report, 3,150,000 square meters of open space would be required to provide 900,000 people with covered shelters.

The report also offers a list of potential sites by classifying them in three groups – large, medium and small. The study has identified two large blocks of land at Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur and National Agricultural Research Centre in Lalitpur. These two areas could hold up to 118,000 people.

The report has identified six medium camps in the capital. Ratnapark/Tundikhel area, Gokarna Golf Club, Birendra Sainik School in Bhaktapur, the southern end of the runway of the International Airport, the oxygenation park on the banks of Bagmati River have enough open space to accommodate 20,000-45,000 people. Small camps have been identified in 75 places that could accommodate about 387,000 people around the valley.

In the event of an earthquake, 95 percent of water pipes in the Valley would be destroyed and pumping capacity reduced by half. The report states that the density of the camps would pose serious challenges to water, sanitation, food distribution and security.
