Google has announced that it will shut down Picnik, Google Message Continuity and Needlebase and make changes to some of its services. Google had acquired Picnik in 2010 to integrate the photo editing service with its own Picasa. Google Message Continuity (GMC) was used to back up Microsoft Exchange emails and the service will also be discontinued. Google plans to focus its efforts on Google Apps although hundreds of businesses had signed up for the GMC service when it was launched.
Google will shut down Social Graph API on April 20 and its data management platform, Needlebase on June 1. It will also stop offering a client-hosted version of Urchin, an online analytics product and will instead focus on the online offering of Analytics.
Google is also planning to open source Sky Map, the Android app that uses GPS to show users constellations in the night sky. Last year, Google had announced the closure of other services including Buzz, Code Search, Jaiku, Fast Flip and Image Labeler.
