The government’s lacksture effort in monitoring foreign employment agencies has led to more fraudulent activities this year. So far 222 cases have been filed at the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) against various foreign employment agencies seeking compensation of Rs 125.57 million.
According to DoFE, 800 individuals are issued permits to leave the country for foreign employment everyday and limited workforce has made it impossible for the department to conduct effective monitoring. Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) has demanded that the government regulate the industry with effective monitoring and strict inspection.
Well International Manpower agency was in the news recently after its owner, Bimala Lama fled with Rs 130 million collected from over 600 job aspirants who were promised jobs in Poland.
Huge number of Nepali workers are also leaving from New Delhi to the Gulf countries after the goverment started stricter inspection at the international airport and this has led to middle-men exploiting the migrant workers and leaving them stranded in India and the Gulf region. The DoFE had planned to start on-site monitoring of recruiting agencies last year but so far it has not begun its inspection citing limited workforce. The department had requested the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management for additional 35 officials but the ministry has not responded to its request so far.
