Forest Minister Muhammad Wakil Musalman has sacked the member secretary of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Juddha Bahadur Gurung for the second time. Minister Musalman accuses Gurung of embezzling funds, hiring 100 employees without open competition and handing out financial assistance to political and ethnic organizations.
Minister Musalman had previously sacked Gurung on November 14, 2011 on the same charges but the Supreme Court (SC) had stayed the minister’s decision saying proper procedures were not followed. Gurung has also accused the minister for asking for bribes.According to the minister’s aide, Gurung doled out funds to CPM-UML’s sister organizations and a Gurung organization.
District Forest Officers (DFO) have also complained about Minister Musalman after he asked for bribes to transfer them to ‘lucrative’ districts. So far, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has refused to take action against Musalman as he needs the support of Madeshi political parties to maintain the coalition. Musalman is a Constituent Assembly member from Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik).
