As expected, Islamist parties have secured majority of seats in the lower house of Egypt’s first post-revolution parliament. According to latest projections, Islamists have won about 62 percent of the popular vote in the final round of the elections although final results will only be known after runoffs for individual seats are held this week.
Although no parties won an outright majority, the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, now holds the majority of seats in the first elected body since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster in February. Freedom and Justice Party appears to have won 41 percent of the seats in the lower house followed by 21 percent for another Islamist group, Salfist Nour Party.
According to political analysts, Islamist parties will now control the legislature and will make up the majority of a body that will write Egypt’s new constitution.
The lower house is the most important body in Egypt’s bicameral system and is also known as the People’s Assembly. 498 seats are chosen by voters and additional 10 will be chosen by the country’s interim military rulers. The elections for the upper house will begin on Jan 29.
