Two bomb attacks in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province have killed at least 16 people Wednesday. According to Afghan officials, more than 13 civilians and two police personnel were killed in the first attack in the Kajaki district. More than 20 people were also wounded in the blast.
The second attack occurred a few hours later in the Nad Ali district, claiming the lives of an Afghan intelligence official and his two bodyguards. The roadside bomb hit the vehicle in which the National Department of Security (NDS) chief Wali Mohammad was traveling. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the second attack.
The attack comes despite the efforts of the Afghani government and the US to engage the Taliban for peace talks. Mohammad was considered one of the most effective government official in the region and had helped to bring in Taliban fighters and commanders into the government.
