Stratfor, a US-based security think tank has suspended its email and servers after its data was compromised by an activist hacker group, Anonymous. The hacker group has claimed that it has stolen thousands of emails, passwords and credit card details from Stratfor. The group also claimed that it was able to obtain the information because Stratfor did not encrypt it.
Stratfor’s clients include law enforcement agencies, media organizations and even the US defence department. Stratfor has refuted the claim by the hacker group and informed the media that the disclosure was a list of members who had purchased publications from the think thank and does not compromise information of individuals or organizations who have a relationship with Stratfor.
A member of Anonymous has also posted an online message, claiming that the group used the credit card details accessed from Stratfor’s servers to donate over a million dollars to different charities around the world.
