Maiti Nepal, Birgunj Branch Office has reported that it rescued 174 women and children in 2011. 60 women and children who were under physical and sexual exploitation in India and third world countries were also rescued by the organization.
The highest number of those rescued come from Sarlahi, Mahottari and Rautahat districts of Nepal. According to Maiti Nepal, 67 women and children from these districts were rescued.
Maiti Nepal, based in Kathmandu, was established in 1993 by Anuradha Koirala. The organization’s mission is to combat trafficking of women and children. It also provides comprehensive prevention and rehabilitation programs for victims and has now branched out in all border towns of Nepal-India border to monitor and prevent trafficking of women and children to India and other countries.
