Update: A fire broke out at the Kalimati fruit and vegetables market in the capital on Saturday night, leaving six dead and one other severely injured.
Four of the victims are members of a single family and have been identified as, Hira Bahadur Pun, 50, a security guard at the market, his daughters Shanti, 16, Nira, 14 and son Nirajan, 12. Pun’s wife Hikka is undergoing treatment at the nearby Army Hospital, Chhauni. Another Om Prakash Jaishwal,13 of Biratnagar, son of Nawal Jaishwal was dead on this incident.
The identity of the other one deceased have not been established yet. It has been learnt that the fire was caused due to electric short circuit.
A fire at Fruits and Vegetable Market at Kalimati on Saturday destroyed property worth millions of rupees. The fire broke out at around midnight on the main building of the market. It took almost two hours and five fire engines to control the flame. Firefighters are still working on the extinguishing.
Wife of the security guard is known to be injured and is rushed to Army hospital, Chhauni. The cause of this huge loss is yet to be known.
Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market is the only pioneer organized terminal wholesale market where retailers, institutional consumers and other bulk consumers procure their supplies of commodities.
