A fundraiser dinner was organized at Temptation cuisine on Sunday, August 7, 2011 by a group of Nepali business entrepreneurs living in DFW Metroplex to support Darshan Rauniyar who is running as a Democratic candidate for the 2012 election in Washington State’s first Congressional district. He is probably the first Nepali contesting for the US Congress.
At the event, Mr. Rauniyar spoke about his candidacy and asked everyone attending the event to support him so he can represent Nepalis in US congress. He emphasized on the fact that he will be the voice of us (Nepalis) so we could create an identity of our own in this country.
Darshan has been active in county and district level Demorcatic Party politics for almost a decade now. He told the crowd that he got into politics because he wants to see our kids grow up in the same America that he came to, the land of opportunity that attracts people from around the world. He said, “Today America is not what it was when I first came to this country”.
Krishna Lamichhane hosted the event while Bhim Karki and Pasang Lama spoke about why we all Nepalis should unite and support Darshan’s candidacy.
A total of $12, 421 was raised at the event. Mr. Rauniyar thanked everyone for attending and for their generous donation. He also added that it was one of the best fundraisers since he started his campaign for the election.
